No more than 3 months after the Redmi Note 2 was released, the Redmi Note 3 - also known as Hongmi Note 3 - was released in November 2015, offering upgraded features all packed in the same great economical deal. Adding a fingerprint sensor and 30% larger battery capacity, the newest addition to Xiaomi's bargain line even gets a packaging facelift. It comes in a white box with printed picture and texts, departing from Xiaomi's traditional plain brown box.

Design

Available in silver, dark grey and gold, the Redmi Note 3 gets classy with its metal back case, with its upper and lower end made of plastic to guarantee best quality reception, along with a new and improved look compared to the Redmi Note 2. Despite different textures between the two materials, it still gives you a steady, smooth grip.

Network

Being a dual SIM phone, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3's SIM tray takes up to two micro SIMs. In one of the product photos we show the phone's dual SIM tray.

On the screenshot you can see on the top right corner that the phone automatically connected to Telstra's 4G network. In separate tests it also connected to Optus 4G and Vodafone 4G.

Battery Life

Its non-removable 4000 mAh battery gives an impressive, long-lasting use for a full day! A fast charging mode is also available, catering to those who are always on the go. Despite the large battery capacity, the phone still manages to keep its phone thickness to 8.656 mm, and weight to 164 g.

Camera

The 13-MP rear camera is supported with Phase Detection Auto-focus technology. Our tests showed impressive focus and shutter speed, allowing fleeting moments to be captured. Under sufficient lighting, it produces decent image quality. However, there’s a sizeable quality drop in pictures taken in a low-light conditions.

Software

Unlike its predecessor, the phone runs on MIUI 7 (the first Mi to do so), and is based on Android 5. The new software dramatically increases response speed in opening applications and the phone system, as well as enhances battery efficiency. MIUI - Xiaomi's own version of Android - has been advancing its technology: creating perfection in its functions and usability, while also putting in effort to increase response time.

Although Google Play Store doesn't come pre-installed, it is easy to install it. We have documented the steps to install Google Play Store on our blog, complete with screenshots.

Unlike its predecessor, Redmi Note 3 is able to perform screen mirroring using Chromecast to an HDMI-enabled display/TV. Of course, casting Youtube or Netflix works too, just as it does for Redmi Note 2.

Language

The English language is supported out of the box. When the phone is booted the first time, English can be selected as the phone's language.

All genuine devices that originate from China come with pre-installed apps made by Xiaomi themselves. A handful of these apps always remain in Chinese, defying your language setting. We recommend that you ignore these apps and install any desired apps from Google Play Store.
